Over the past few years the womens ultimate team has been involved in the Sports section of Encounters Canada, teaching ultimate to high school students from all across the country.

This fall, we've done six sessions, leading to over 200 students learning about ultimate and how to play the game! It's exciting to see the passion for sport in the high school community, and for the Lady GeeGees to be a part of it!

Heading to London

The team is heading out to play at CEUUC this weekend. This will be our first tournament as a team, as well as being the first ultimate frisbee tournament for several girls on the roster.

As we travel to London, we will be up against past season rivals such as Toronto, McGill and Guelph, and several others. We're looking to keep the CEUUC champion title in Ottawa, so GIDDY UP GEE-GEES!

Heading to Manheim, Pennsylvania where they will match up against several rivals from their conference (Cornell University Wild Roses) and former region (potential to play University of Maryland Helpful Corn, Pennsylvania VENUS and Penn State ISIS). Lady GG's 2010-2011... gearing up!

The Lady Gee-Gees team is a competitive club team, with practices 4 times/week (player attendance at practices as school schedules allow) and participating in multiple tournaments throughout the year. Our season(s) runs from September to the end of October, as well as from January to April/May (potential to be a part of the team for just one season).

Additionally, this year the Lady Gee-Gees have been selected to host the Canadian University Ultimate Championships here in Ottawa, and we are extremely excited to get our team up and running to prepare for nationals in our hometown.

Tryouts will be held in early/mid September, with the team selection taking place at the end of the tryout week.

TRYOUT DATES:
Monday September 13, 5-7pm @ St. Pauls University (end of Oblate St, off Main)
Tuesday September 14, 8-11am @ UOttawa turf field
Wednesday September 15, 5-7pm @ St Pauls
Thursday September 16, 8-11am @ UOttawa turf field

Tryouts 2009-2010!

Tryouts and practice times for the fall have been finalized! They are either at the Sports Complex fields (SCS) at King E and Templeton, or at St-Paul's University (SPU) at 175 Main St.

Tryout times are:
- Monday, September 14th from 4-6pm at SPU
- Tuesday, September 15th from 8-11am at SCS
- Wednesday, September 16th from 4-6pm at SPU
- Thursday, September 17th from 8-11am at SCS

Please bring a white AND a black shirt, cleats (or running shoes) and some H2O.

Lady GeeGees win Centex 2009

The Lady GeeGees returned home yesterday after earning the title of 2009 Women's College Centex tournament champions.

The team traveled to Austin, TX for the two day tournament to compete against the top North American college teams.

Entering the tournament ranked second, the Lady GeeGees defeated UCSD (11-6), Dartmouth (14-4), and Western Washington (15-8) in pool play. The 3-0 record allowed the team to rest during the last round on Saturday and advance directly to the Sunday pre-quarter game against Pittsburg (15-8).

The road to the finals included wins against California (15-9) in quarters and UBC (15-3) in semis. UCSB earned a spot in the finals against the Lady GeeGees after beating out Wisconsin on universe point in their semi-final game. In the finals, the Lady GeeGees took half 8-7 (after being down 2-7) and took the game 15-11. The high winds and Texan sun couldn't stop the 11 player Lady GeeGees roster from claiming the title at their last pre-series tournament. The team heads to Ithaca, NY this weekend for their sectionals qualifying tournament on the road to the UPA Championships in Columbus, Ohio (May 22-25).

A great big thanks to the University of Texas Womens Ultimate Program and the UPLA for running such a great tournament and Special Thanks to Stephanie Redfern and Katie Blyth and last but not least Michelle Ng for accommodating us all around! Y'all are the bestest! ;)

Update on the RSA Initiative

First off we would like to thank everyone who contributed to this initiative. With their help and that of VC Ultimate who generously matched all the clothes purchased we have delivered the t-shirts, sweatshirts and discs to South Africa through one of our players and we have managed to also raise almost $300 in funds to help our team achieve its goal!

Hereby attached is a copy of Rochelle's (our player who delivered the goods) update to our team and pictures from her experience.

"Dumela!

I don’t know how many of you actually saw the mound of clothes that we got together, but I can say that I was astonished. So thank you for everyone who participated!! Anyway, I wanted to make sure that the clothes really went where it would have the most impact, so I chose (with the help of my grandmother) a place called “Rising Eagles”. It is a Christian organization that has really good goals and strategies to improve the surrounding communities for both the students who participate in the program, and everyone that they come in contact with.

The facility is a big farm just outside of “Somerset West” (Cape Town area) that was donated a few years ago. Currently, they are able to accommodate approximately 40 students, giving them food shelter. The students are selected on the basis that they showed potential to succeed at school, work, or around the community. Typically these students come from squatter shacks around 6m x 6m in size with 10 people living under the same roof. What the program is aimed to do is to educate them in life skills (ie manners, how to cook, wash, how to act in a professional setting etc. etc.) so that they may further their education or find a well paid job, as well as give them the opportunities and “connections” to start a better life for themselves. Each of the students get a piece of land where they learn to farm, water purification and then go on to learn how to make use of what they have grown. They also go on to teach the people of the community these skills, and with the help of the organization, teach them how to start independent businesses for example.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get to meet any of the students because of the holidays (which is when they graduate the program) but read a few of the stories that they wrote about their experiences. Most of the students come from the “village” (which is more the size of a city) Khyalitsha. As you can imagine, there are no washing facilities, and often have to walk for hours to get water. (These villages are being improved, but that’s a story on its own). One of the girls wrote that they had one outfit for the entire family- so when she went to school her parents and two brothers would stay home… providing that she brought food/water/ money for the family. She was 12 when she started supporting her family as well as her father’s alcoholism. The stories go on of victims of gang rape, abuse, hunger and is really beyond anything we can understand. One of the organizers said that they have never had a student enter the program with more than two shirts, and one pair of shorts. So what we sent will really be some of the first new clothes that they will ever get. I did get to meet the "youth advisor" who graduated from the program a few years back. He ran away after his father who was a witchdoctor offered him up to "the spirits" and came across the program. He is a great guy, and is extremely excited about the clothes and especially the frisbees. I showed him the basics, and is absolutely STOKED to get started with the rest of the students.

Anyway! They do a lot more but I thought I’d give you a little overview! They promised me they would try send a picture of all the new students wearing the clothes, and will pass that on as soon as I can. I hope that everyone is happy with where the clothes went. Lady Gee-Gees South Africa Initiative Fundraiser

The Lady GeeGees ultimate team is putting together a suitcase to send with one of the ladies going home to South Africa for Christmas. In partnership with VC, we're selling t-shirts and sweatshirts that will be taken to a youth organization in South Africa.

Here's who it will be going to: Kids who live in an area that is surrounded by the ocean. It gets really cold at night and even though they are trying to supply these kids with shelter and stuff, some of them still end up sleeping on the streets.

With one gift you'll be a) promoting ultimate b) helping a community in South Africa and c) helping the Lady Gee-Gees have another awesome season!

Want to get involved? Here's how it will work:

T-Shirts will cost $10, sweatshirts $20, discs $15 (~5 from each will go to the Lady Gee Gees 2009 Spring season)

The Lady Gee-Gees qualified this past weekend for the UPA College Championships and took the first seed at the Metro East Regionals, beating a talented Maryland 15-2.

The Ladies will be off to Colorado in 3 weeks and looking to represent Ottawa for the first time ever in the College Series!

Trouble in Vegas 2008

The LadyGs took Vegas by surprise by going 9-0 and winning the tournament! The team became known as "the team from nowhere!" The Ladies took on Washington, Wisconsin and finally UCLA in the finals on Sunday. For more information & clips (compliments of UV) see the "Results" & "Photos" section.

CEUUC 2007 Champs!

The Lady Gee-Gees kicked off their 2007-2008 season adding another tournament win under their belt!!! The team went undefeated all weekend at Sod Farm and beat a talented U of T in the finals 12-6 on Sunday.

This past weekend showed off the team's depth as its leaders and veteran players stepped up to the plate but most importantly demonstrated its huge pool of new up and coming talent! This promises an exciting season for the Lady Gee-Gees!

Tryouts for the 2007-2008 season will be:

1) Sunday September 9th from 1-3pm (at Strathcona Park). We'll meet near the parking lot (at Somerset St E and Range Rd)

2) Tuesday September 11th from 8-10.30am (at the Sport Complex Fields).

3) Thursday September 13th from 8-10.30am (at the Sport Complex Fields).

There will be no organized pre-tryouts practice or scrimmage, but the space is there for you. Please use our 1/2 of the fields as the uOttawa Mens Ultimate team will be hosting their tryouts those dates.
